DUTIES:
All staff at Northern College are ambassadors of community and college development.  This position enhances the capacity of the region through active participation in a wide range of activities aimed at building stronger more vibrant Northern communities.  All positions at Northern College support the development of the College and Northern Ontario through teamwork.  All successful candidates will be expected to evolve a professional development plan that indicates avenues for sustained professional growth.
Reporting to the Supervisor, Student Services and Facilities, the incumbent is responsible to provide support services as well as social and academic advising to Aboriginal students at the Porcupine campus, and some First Nations community-based programs sites (Constance Lake, New Post, Mattagami, etc).  The incumbent is also involved in the recruitment of Aboriginal students, advising Aboriginal student groups and ensuring that College policies and guidelines are followed, and the promotion of all Northern College programs and services. 
The incumbent will also facilitate life skills learning in both group and one-on-one formats for Aboriginal students. He/she will  liaise, advocate and  facilitate dialogue between faculty, First Nations Education Counsellors and others  on behalf of Aboriginal students.

QUALIFICATIONS:
The minimum level of formal education that is required for the position is a 2 year diploma Human Services field such as Social Work or Native Studies; minimum of three years experience working  with Aboriginal people in the social field. It is expected that the incumbent will be knowledgeable about Aboriginal community resources and issues. Ability to speak an Aboriginal language is an asset.
This position requires strong leadership skills, visionary capacity and a commitment to positive community development.

Proof of valid WHMIS/WHMIS Review card is a requirement for employment with Northern College.”
