Health & Safety Coordinator          

Location:               Corporate Board Office, Schumacher Ontario

Start date:               As soon as possible

Position Summary:

 

Reporting to the Superintendent of Education responsible for Health and Safety, the Health and Safety Coordinator will work collaboratively with all schools and departments within District School Board Ontario North East. The Health and Safety Coordinator provides guidance and coordination of the Board’s Occupational Health and Safety Policy and Procedures, ensures compliance and due diligence with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and develops, organizes, and delivers health and safety related training to employees.

 

Requirements:

 

• Completion of a post-secondary program in Occupational Health and Safety from a recognized learning institution or equivalent applicable training and experience.

• Professional Certifications including Canadian Registered Professional JHSC Certification (CRSP) and/or Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC).

• Three (3) years previous related experience in a unionized public sector organization.

• Familiarity with Ministry of Education Policy/Program Memorandums (PPMs).

• Working at Heights Train-the-Trainer certification is preferred.

• Standard First Aid & CPR Train-the-Trainer certification is preferred.

• Experience in working with legislation related to fire and safety standards and building codes considered an asset.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

• Research and develop content related to health and safety training, policies, procedures, and program.

• Deliver health and safety presentations and training.

• Responsibly coordinate and ensure the safe disposal of hazardous materials in accordance with regulation.

• Support school administrators, department managers, employees to perform accident investigations and report accordingly in compliance with board policy and regulations.

• Provide support, guidance, and training/certification to joint health and safety committees.

• Accompanies Ministry of Labour inspectors to Board sites, receives subsequent reports, and ensure implementation of orders.

• Coordinate annual school/building inspections, prepares and distributes inspection reports, analyze trends and concerns and follow-up accordingly.

• Review all accident reports, whether WSIB or insurance related and works with appropriate staff to determine Risk Management within the Board’s procedures

• Attend internal and external meetings related to Health and Safety, inclusive of professional development.

• Develop, implement, and evaluate health and safety guidelines, procedures, and services in accordance with the strategic direction, operational strategies, applicable legislation, and legal obligations of the board.

• Perform on site safety audits and inspections to ensure compliance, evaluate performance, identify corrective action, and implement follow up assessments, and works with site staff to mitigate job site hazards.

• Conduct ergonomic assessments

• Plan, implement, and conduct safety and compliance training programs.

• Ensure all training records are up to date and complete based on requirements of positions.

 

Knowledge:

 

• Comprehensive understanding and working knowledge of OHSA and its regulations, related federal, provincial, and local health and safety regulation as well as guidelines for Ontario school boards.

• Current knowledge of relevant legislation and statutory requirements.

• Practical experience in accident investigations and identification of safety hazards.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office software.

 

Skills/ Abilities:

 

• Interpret, communicate, and apply various legislation language, policies, and procedures.

• Ability to quickly recognize hazards or potential hazards.

Ability to breakdown complex concepts into simple and understandable terms.

• Highly developed interpersonal skills, personal influence, and the demonstration of safety knowledge with effective communication skills, both orally and in writing.

• Conflict management, union relations.

• Some after-hours work may be required depending on business needs and emergencies.

•A valid drivers license is required.

 

Salary:  According to the current non-union compensation schedule
