Position Summary:  The successful candidate will promote the personal, cultural, educational, and social development of youth who attend our lodge. Trauma informed, strength-based counselling, emotional support and crisis management are other priority services.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

•           A culturally sensitive professional with strong listening and coaching skills

•           Actively assist youth in identifying individualized wellness plans and goals

•           Monitor and evaluate progress and adapt wellness plan as required

•           Provide individual and group counseling as required

•           Provide youth crisis intervention counselling as required

•           Provide active and awake supervision to youth during scheduled shift

•           Assist youth in learning more about and/or connecting with self through a variety of interventions and activities

•           Assist youth in program by focusing on strength-based approaches to building resiliency and self-esteem

•           Guide youth through role modeling conflict resolution and problem-solving strategies

•           Ensure that youth are engaged and connected to programming and supports offered.

•           Assist youth and families in discharge and aftercare planning

•           Assist youth and families while delivering a pre-treatment virtual program  

•           Work in a team environment, and independently

•           Where necessary, assist in planning, design, and facilitation of program

•           Incorporate Indigenous culture in all aspects of healing and treatment activities

•           Keep current on all social concerns and trends, and as required, attend professional development activities to remain informed regarding issues affecting youth

•           Collaborate on the planning and implementation of a variety of community activities/events to promote the personal wellness of youth

•           Host meetings, and build/strengthen bridges between traditional and mainstream approaches to youth wellness

•           Develop, implement and/or coordinate a variety of mental health-related healing activities

•           Lead and participate in youth program activities

•           Prepare clear, concise, and accurate daily logs as well as all required documentation including but not limited to medication management, serious occurrence reporting, incident reporting plans of care, case filing

•           Perform other duties within the scope of the position, as assigned

 

Basic Qualifications

•           All employees of WYHL are required to submit a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Screening, comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), its regulations and all occupational health and safety policies and procedures

•           Further, to be available to work on a rotating schedule during delivery of our residential program and flexible hours between intakes. And to attend cultural awareness training among other training

•           Please note that preference will be given to qualified First Nations and Anishinaabe applicants. We welcome and encourage applications from people with disabilities

 

Education / Work Experience

•           Completion or in pursuit of Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Psychology, or other related degrees/diploma and/or five (5) years of related experience

•           Knowledge of trauma, human development, and addictions

•           Current First Aid and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certificates

•           Knowledge of issues/needs of high risk youth including self-harm, suicide and mental health

•           Professional verbal, written and interpersonal skills

•           Experience assisting at-risk youth in crisis

•           Well-developed communication and a commitment to providing quality youth service by establishing and maintaining effective working relationships

•           Applicants must exercise a high standard of professionalism with sound judgment and have the ability to work independently and as part of a team

•           Experience in coordinating and facilitating workshops and groups

•           Experience with Aboriginal culture and communities would be considered an asset

•           Valid driver’s license

 

Working Conditions

•           Travel in this position may be required

•           Non-standard hours of work, adjusted schedule to accommodate 24/7 residential program
