Position Summary
This is a specialized technical position under the supervision of the Chief Training Officer. This Officer will act as a Lieutenant on their regular duties. This officer will conduct pre-service and skills maintenance training of Fire Department staff and assists with training conducted by Captains and Senior Officers. Assists in developing programs and produces lesson plans and training aids. Reports to the Chief Training Officer on results of tests and practical exercises pertaining to recruit and in-service training. Keeps abreast of changing local conditions and technological changes in firefighting operations. Creates a desire for learning and advancement. Assists in conducting testing and maintenance programs for specific equipment and records all information. This officer can be assigned as an Incident Safety Officer during emergency operations.
Duties
• Assists in developing and delivering training programs on firefighting and emergency response operations.
• Assists in developing and delivering training programs for fire, rescue and extrication in varied forms, emergency first responder and responses to hazardous materials spills or leaks for the whole department (career and volunteer firefighters).
• Assists in developing and delivering training programs for firefighters on fire prevention, inspection and public education.
• Assists in maintaining complete records on all training conducted.
• Perform the duties of the Chief Training Officer when required.
• Assists in maintaining, testing and recording maintenance programs for specific equipment.
• Conducts off site training for industry, private sector, etc. as required.
• May respond to emergencies to act as Incident Safety Officer or other position as needed
• Performs all other related duties or tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
• Ontario Secondary School Diploma
• Valid class DZ driver's licence for the Province of Ontario including air brake endorsement.
• NFPA 1041 Fire Instructor Level 1
• NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Level 1
• NFPA 1521 Incident Safety Officer
• NFPA 1001 Firefighter I & II
• EFR Instructor
• Must meet all contractual obligations and requirements along with a combination of experience, ability and formal training. Must have demonstrated technical and leadership abilities with good verbal and written communications skills. Shall be willing & prepared to take other related courses or training as assigned.
• Knowledge of Departmental rules, regulations, policies, procedures, directives, and operational guidelines, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ministry of Labour Fire Services Section 21, and appropriate NFPA Standards.
• Extensive knowledge of methods and strategies in all aspects of emergency operations and the operation and maintenance of fire department vehicles, equipment and facilities.
• Ability to prepare lectures, demonstrations, lesson plans, training aids and manuals.
• Knowledge in the operation and maintenance of audio/visual resources.
• Ability to lead people and exercise good judgment.
• Ability to effectively teach varied subjects to students at all levels.
• Possess mechanical skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
In the event that the successful candidate doesn’t have all the required certifications listed in the attached job description, the successful candidate will have three (3) years to obtain all the required certifications.
