ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Northern Sun Mining currently has an exciting opportunity for a Metallurgist to join our Metallurgical team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for overseeing metallurgical testing, analyzing plant data, and implementing process and improvements to maximize metal recovery and operational efficiency. This role offers the opportunity to work closely with operations, maintenance, and laboratory teams, providing technical guidance and leadership to ensure production targets are met safely and sustainably. The ideal candidate Please note this is not a camp based position.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Collaborate on developing metallurgical lab testing procedures and recommend process improvements.
- Coach and monitor technicians and operators to ensure tasks are performed efficiently and quality standards.
- Supervise all lab personnel directly.
- Analyze metallurgical data and provide direction for developing milling plans.
- Monitor metallurgical recovery and efficiency; recommend process improvements to maximize metal recoveries.
- Prepare and submit daily KPI reports on process plant performance and efficiencies to management.
- Investigate and recommend short- and long-term projects to enhance milling efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
- Produce and present monthly metallurgical balance reports to management.
- Participate in the hiring process of lab personnel.
- Support capital projects related to environmental and processing technologies.
- Liaise with suppliers to address operational concerns.
- Contribute to developing job procedures for operating personnel and provide hands-on guidance to maintain and improve metallurgical efficiencies.
- Develop and implement laboratory programs, processed, and policies to meet governance requirements and standards.
- Provide expert advice on milling processes and practices across the site.
- Identify and implement best practices for milling and lab operations.
- Work in compliance with prescribed company policies and procedures.
- Other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Mineral Processing, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience in metallurgical operations, preferably in a gold or base metals processing plant.
- Strong understanding of milling, flotation, leaching, gravity separation, and other mineral processing methods.
- Experience in metallurgical testing, data analysis, and process optimization.
- Knowledge of metallurgical balancing, sampling, and recovery calculations.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement laboratory and plant testing procedures.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and implement process improvements.
- Experience supervising and coaching technical staff.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to prepare detailed technical reports and present findings to management.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate across departments.
- Proficiency in using metallurgical software.
- Commitment to health, safety, environmental, and quality standards.
- Familiarity with applicable mining regulations and environmental requirements.
